Eternity

philosophy religion Maturity 13-18 Next article →

Eternity is the idea of time with no end. Some people also call it sempiternity or forever. It describes something that is infinite. This concept is very important to human life. Many people think about death and eternity at the same time.

We can see this idea in many different ways. It can be a way of thinking about time. It can also be a part of religion or science. People use symbols to help them understand it. A circle or a ring is a common symbol. These shapes have no beginning and no end.

Thinkers have different ways to explain how eternity works. Boethius said eternity is a perfect possession of life that never ends. He also called it a "permanent now." This means everything happens at once. Thomas Hobbes used this idea during the Age of Enlightenment. He suggested eternity is a permanent now. This helps us imagine time without a start or a stop.

It is a hard job to define it. Some people find it difficult to truly understand.

Many famous thinkers studied this in the past. Plato lived a long time ago. He said time is a moving image of eternity. Aristotle also had ideas about this. He believed the sky was eternal. Later, thinkers like Augustine and Boethius shaped how people think today. In the western tradition, they were very influential.

They helped set the stage for new ideas. Their work connects old thoughts to new ones.

Different cultures have their own names for eternity. Ancient Egyptians used two different words. They used "neheh" for time that moves in a circle. They used "djet" for time that moves in a line. Rameses III had a temple named "United-with-Eternity." In the Old Testament, the name El-Olam is used. This name means God is eternal.

Many religions believe gods exist forever. They believe gods have no beginning or end.

We can also find eternity in math and science. Some scientists look at the universe through physics. They use General Relativity to study if universes can be eternal. This is a topic for the 21st century. People also use the symbol for infinity in math.

Another famous symbol is the ouroboros. This is a snake that swallows its own tail. These symbols all remind us of the same thing. They show us things that never stop.
