People throughout history have wondered about the nature of the divine.

Some groups see God as a powerful person who listens to prayers. Others view God as a vast, mysterious idea called the "Absolute" or the "Ultimate." These ideas can be very abstract. Some thinkers believe God is simply the ground of all existence. This means God is the base that allows everything else to be. There is no single way that everyone agrees on what God is. Instead, there are many different traditions and belief systems. One thing they all share is that people recognize these ideas as divine.

In ancient times, philosophers had very specific ways of describing this power.

The Greek philosopher Aristotle wrote about an "Unmoved Mover" in his book, *Metaphysics*. He believed this being was perfect and did not change. It does not move because it is pushed, but because it contemplates perfection. You might imagine it like a person pushing the first domino in a long line. The first domino falls, and then all the others follow. This being stays still while causing everything else to move. This is quite different from how many religions see a personal God.

Other ancient traditions, like Hermeticism, had a different view of the divine.

In these Greek writings, God is called many names like "The All" or "The One." They believed God is both the creator and the thing being created. This means all things exist within God, and God is the nature of the whole universe. This idea is very close to what the Stoics believed about the cosmos. It suggests that the creator and the creation are deeply linked together. This makes the divine feel like it is both far away and right here.

Many people today follow the Abrahamic traditions, which include Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.

These faiths often see God as an eternal creator who knows everything. They believe God is outside of space and time, which is called being "transcendent." However, they also believe God is "personal" and cares about people. The Baháʼí Faith also believes in one eternal God who is beyond our full understanding. They teach that God sends "Manifestations," or divine messengers, to help humans. These messengers help show God's will and purpose to the world.

Within Christianity, there are many different ways to understand the nature of God.

Trinitarians believe in one God who exists as three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Other groups, like Unitarians, believe God is only one single person. Binitarians hold a middle view, believing in two equal powers in heaven. Mormonism also has its own unique way of describing the Godhead. They teach that the Father and the Son have physical, material bodies. Each of these groups has its own long history and special way of explaining the divine.
