People have wondered about the existence of God for a very long time. This big question is a major part of the philosophy of religion. Some thinkers use logic to explore these ideas. Others look at the world around them for clues. These discussions often involve how we know things and what it means to exist.

Philosophers group these ideas into different categories. Some arguments are logical or scientific. Others are based on personal feelings or the nature of being. These different paths help people explore their deepest questions.

Many famous thinkers have shared their own views. Long ago, Plato and Aristotle spoke about a being that shaped the universe. This idea is often called a cosmological argument. Later, St. Anselm created an ontological argument. Thomas Aquinas also shared a famous version of the cosmological argument. René Descartes argued that a good God makes our senses meaningful.

Other thinkers, like John Calvin, believed humans have a natural sense of the divine. These ideas show how much people have thought about this subject.

Different cultures and religions offer many perspectives. Islamic scholars like Al-Ghazali and Al-Kindi used the Kalam cosmological argument. The scholar Ibn Rushd looked at nature to find clues. He noted how weather and the sun and moon help humans live. He believed a higher being must have tuned the world for us.

A Jewish scholar named Maimonides also used logic. He argued that the motion of the stars requires an infinite power. These scholars used the world they saw to explain their beliefs.

There are many ways to describe a relationship with God. Some people follow theism, the belief that a God exists. Others follow atheism, the belief that no God exists. Some people hold the view of pantheism. In pantheism, God and the universe are the same thing.

Other views include deism, where God is separate from the universe. Some people are agnostic, meaning they feel they cannot know the answer. Each position offers a different way to look at the mystery.

Modern studies show that people still hold many different views. A survey from 2020 looked at what philosophers believe. Among those who study religion, about 69.50% lean toward theism. About 19.86% of those same people lean toward atheism. However, all philosophers are often more skeptical. In that same survey, 66.72% of all philosophers leaned toward atheism. This shows that the debate remains very active and important today.
