Amputation is the removal of a limb or a body part.

This can happen because of an injury, a sickness, or a medical surgery. Doctors sometimes use surgery to stop a disease from spreading. For example, they might remove a part with cancer or gangrene. Gangrene is a condition where body parts die. In some special cases, a baby might be born with a limb missing. This is called a congenital amputation. It can happen when tight bands in the womb cut off a limb.

When a doctor performs this surgery, they follow specific steps. First, they must ligate the arteries and veins. This means they tie them off to prevent bleeding. Next, they cut through the muscles. Then, they use a saw to go through the bone. They must file down any sharp or rough edges on the bone. Finally, they move skin and muscle flaps over the end of the limb. This is called a stump. Sometimes, they attach the muscle to the bone to help it work better. This method is called myodesis.

People have been practicing amputation for a very long time. The oldest evidence was found in a cave in Indonesia. This skeleton was found in the Liang Tebo cave in East Kalimantan. It dates back at least 31,000 years. The person had an amputation when they were a young child. In the 18th century, people used different guides for these surgeries.

Throughout history, amputation has also been used as a punishment for crimes. In 1779, Thomas Jefferson even proposed a bill in Virginia that included amputation as a penalty. That bill never passed because some thought it was too mean.

There are many different types of amputations. For legs, there are minor ones like losing a finger. Major ones include below-knee or above-knee amputations. There are also ankle disarticulations, which happen at the ankle joint. For arms, there are many types too. These include below-elbow or above-elbow amputations. Some people even have facial amputations, like losing an ear or a nose.

Amputation can also happen because of extreme cold. This is called frostbite. Ice crystals form in the skin and kill the cells. In rare cases, a person might even amputate their own limb to escape being trapped. This happened to a hiker named Aron Ralston.

Even though a limb is gone, people can still do many things. Many people use a prosthesis to help them. A prosthesis is an artificial body part. Some new ones are bioelectric, which means they use electricity to help. This can help a person feel sensation again.

Some athletes even choose to have a finger removed to stop pain. For example, a football player named Daniel Chick had a finger removed. This helped him play better. Modern science is always finding new ways to help people use their new limbs.
