Asphyxia

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Asphyxia is a serious condition where the body does not get enough oxygen. This happens when breathing becomes abnormal or stops. When oxygen levels drop, it causes a state called hypoxia. This affects all the organs and tissues in the body. Some parts of the body feel the effects faster than others. This condition can lead to a coma or even death. In 2015, about 9.8 million unintentional suffocations occurred. These accidents resulted in 35,600 deaths worldwide.

There are many ways the body can lose its oxygen supply. One way is through airway obstruction, which means something blocks the path of air. This can happen from asthma or choking on food. Another way is being in a place with very little oxygen. This includes being underwater or in a vacuum. Some environments have air, but it is contaminated by smoke. Carbon monoxide is a dangerous gas found in car exhaust. It sticks to the red blood cells in your blood. This stops the blood from carrying oxygen to your body.

People have studied these breathing problems for a long time. The word asphyxia comes from Ancient Greek words. One part means "without" and the other means "squeeze." In the past, people used specific names for different methods. For example, "burking" was a name for a specific way of killing. This name came from William Burke and William Hare. They used smothering and chest pressure on their victims. They even sold the bodies to medical schools for money.

Many different types of asphyxia exist in science. Smothering happens when the mouth or nose is blocked. Compressive asphyxia is when the chest is squeezed. This prevents the lungs from expanding to take in air. This can happen in large crowds during big events. At the Hillsborough disaster in 1989, 97 people died. Most of them died from this type of compression. In the 2022 Seoul Halloween crowd crush, at least 159 people died. Even snakes like boa constrictors use this method to hunt.

Understanding these risks helps us stay safe in the world. We can learn how to help if someone is choking. If a person is choking on food, you can act. Stand behind them and wrap your arms around them. Push inwards and upwards under the ribs with your hands. This sudden movement might clear the blocked airway. Doctors also study how to help newborn babies breathe. In 2010, new guidelines suggested using normal air for babies. This research was led by Ola Didrik Saugstad.
