Perinatal asphyxia is a serious medical condition for newborn babies. It happens when a baby does not get enough oxygen during birth. This lack of oxygen can last long enough to cause harm. The brain is the part of the body that is most at risk. This condition can also affect the heart, lungs, liver, gut, and kidneys.

There are many ways this oxygen shortage can happen. Sometimes it starts before the birth, which doctors call antepartum causes. A mother might have low blood pressure or a heart problem. The placenta might also separate too early. Other times, it happens during the birth process itself. This is called intrapartum. The umbilical cord might knot around the baby's neck. A baby might also be born from a very long delivery.

Doctors use special steps to help a baby breathe again. This process is called resuscitation. First, they must make sure the baby's airway is open. They might use suction to clear it. Next, they help the baby breathe using a mask or a tube. They may also help the baby's blood move with chest compressions. Sometimes, doctors use medicine like adrenaline to help the heart. If the baby is stable, they go to a neonatal intensive care unit.

Scientists have worked hard to find the best ways to help. For a long time, there was a debate about using pure oxygen. Some thought 100% oxygen was best for newborns. However, research showed that too much oxygen can cause harm. A researcher named Ola Didrik Saugstad helped lead new rules. In 2010, new international guidelines were made. These rules suggest using normal air instead of 100% oxygen.

This is a very common issue for many families around the world. The World Health Organization says about 4 million babies die each year from birth asphyxia. This is 38% of all deaths for children under five years old. For babies born at a full term, it happens to 2 to 10 out of every 1000. It happens even more often to babies born too early. In the United States, it was once the tenth leading cause of death for newborns.
