Babies need oxygen to stay healthy. Oxygen is the air that helps our bodies work. Sometimes, a baby does not get enough oxygen during birth. This is called perinatal asphyxia.

This can happen in many ways. It might happen before the birth. For example, a mother's blood pressure might drop. It can also happen during the birth. The umbilical cord might knot around the baby's neck.

When a baby lacks oxygen, it can hurt their organs. The heart and lungs can be hurt. The brain is the part doctors worry about most. It may be hard for the brain to heal. Some babies may face delays in how they grow.

Doctors must act fast to help. They use a set of steps to fix the problem. They make sure the baby can breathe. They may also help the baby's blood move. They might use medicine or chest compressions. If the baby is okay, they go to a special hospital unit. This unit is called a neonatal intensive care unit. It helps very small or sick babies get well.
