Abdominal pain

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Abdominal pain is often called a stomach ache. It can happen for many reasons. Some causes are not serious. Other causes can be very serious. The abdomen is the area that holds many vital organs. These organs help your body work.

Pain can start in different ways. Some pain starts in a split second. This is called sudden onset. Other pain starts mild and gets worse over minutes. This is called rapid onset. Some pain takes hours or days to grow. This is called gradual onset.

People feel pain in different ways too. It can feel like waves that come and go. This is called cramping pain. It builds up and then stops. Other pain might feel dull or aching. This often happens if an organ is stretched or swollen.

Doctors look at where the pain is. They divide the abdomen into four areas called quadrants. For example, pain near the belly button might be appendicitis. This is when the appendix gets sick. Pain in the upper part might involve the stomach. In one out of three cases, the cause is not clear.
