People may feel pain or bloating in their belly. They might feel like they did not finish going to the bathroom.

Most adults go between three times a day and three times a week. Babies often go more often. Many things can cause this. Some people do not eat enough fiber. Fiber is found in food and helps soften stool. Not drinking enough water can also be a cause. Some medicines, like opioids, can make it happen. About 90% of people taking these drugs get constipation.

Doctors look for the cause. They might check for other health issues. These can include problems with the thyroid or diabetes. In some cases, a doctor might see a blockage on an X-ray.

To help, people can eat more fiber and drink more fluids. Moving the body also helps. Some people use laxatives to help them go. A laxative is a medicine that helps move stool through the body.
