Constipation is a symptom that affects how the body moves waste. It happens when bowel movements become infrequent or very hard to pass.

The stool often feels hard and dry. Some people may see small, hard pellets. This can cause belly pain or bloating. You might also feel like you did not finish emptying your bowels. While it is a common problem, it is not a disease itself. Instead, it is a sign that something in the body's routine is changing.

There are many ways this happens in the body. One way is when stool moves too slowly through the colon. This slow movement can make the stool dry out. Another way is through problems with the pelvic floor muscles. Sometimes, a person might even hold their stool in on purpose. This can happen if they fear pain or dislike public restrooms. When stool stays in the body too long, it can lead to other issues. These include things like hemorrhoids or small tears called anal fissures.

Many different factors can cause these changes. Diet is a very common cause for both children and adults. Not eating enough fiber or not drinking enough fluids can lead to problems. Fiber is helpful because it adds bulk and softens the stool. Some medicines also cause this side effect. For example, about 90% of people taking opioids develop constipation. Other medicines like certain antacids or calcium supplements can also play a role. Medical conditions like diabetes or thyroid issues can also be a cause.

Doctors use specific rules to help identify the problem. They use something called the Rome IV Criteria to standardize a diagnosis. This helps doctors define constipation in a clear way for different ages. They look at how often a person goes to the bathroom. Usually, constipation means having fewer than three bowel movements in one week.

Doctors may also use an X-ray to look for blockages. An X-ray can show if there is a lot of stool stuck in the colon. In some cases, they might even use a colonoscopy to check the area.

Helping the body work correctly often starts with simple habits. Drinking enough fluids and eating more fiber can help a lot. Moving the body through exercise is also a good way to help. If those steps do not work, doctors might suggest laxatives. These are medicines that help move things along. There are different kinds, like stool softeners or lubricants. In rare cases, a doctor might suggest surgery. Understanding these steps helps people feel better and stay healthy.
