life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Irritable bowel syndrome, or IBS, is a long-term condition that affects how the gut works. It can cause many different symptoms in the tummy area. People with IBS often feel abdominal pain or discomfort. They might also feel bloating, which is a full or swollen feeling in the belly. IBS can change how often someone needs to go to the bathroom. Some people deal with diarrhea, while others deal with constipation. These symptoms can last for many years and can make daily life hard.

Doctors are still learning exactly how IBS works. Many experts believe the gut-brain axis plays a big role. This is the way the brain and the gut communicate with each other. If this connection has problems, it might cause symptoms. Other ideas include changes in how the gut moves food along. Some people might have a high sensitivity to pain in their gut. Infections can also be a trigger. When an infection starts the problem, it is called post-infectious IBS.

History shows us that people have known about this for a long time. The very first description of the condition was written in 1820. However, the specific name we use today did not arrive until 1944. Since then, more research has helped us understand the different types. We now know that many factors might lead to the condition. This includes things like genetics or how the immune system reacts to food. Scientists are still looking for more exact answers every day.

Many people around the world live with IBS. The average global prevalence, or how common it is, is 11.2%. This number can change a lot depending on the country. For example, it is more common in South America and less common in Southeast Asia. In the Western world, women have IBS twice as often as men. Most people notice it before they reach age 45. Interestingly, it seems to become less common as people get older.

There are many ways to help manage the symptoms of IBS. One way is through dietary changes. Some people try a low-FODMAP diet for a short time. This means eating fewer of certain types of sugars that can cause trouble. Doctors might also suggest probiotics to help the gut. Medicines can help too, such as loperamide for diarrhea. Laxatives can be used to help with constipation. Talking to a doctor is a very important part of feeling better.
