Hypoxia (medicine)

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Our bodies need oxygen to work. Hypoxia is when parts of the body do not get enough oxygen. This can affect your whole body or just one small area.

There are many ways this can happen. You might feel hypoxia if you go to high places. At high altitudes, the air has less oxygen. This can cause altitude sickness. It can also happen when diving underwater. This might occur if breathing gear does not work right. Some tiny babies face hypoxia because their lungs are not fully ready. Doctors help these babies with warm beds and extra oxygen.

Sometimes, hypoxia happens in just one part of the body. This is often due to ischemia. Ischemia is when blood flow to a part is blocked or slow. If blood cannot reach a limb, that part may feel cold. It might even look pale or blue. This blue color is called cyanosis.

If the brain does not get enough oxygen, it is called cerebral hypoxia. This can be very serious. Without enough oxygen, brain cells can die. This is why getting the right amount of air is so important for staying healthy.
