Asphyxia

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Our bodies need oxygen to work. We get oxygen by breathing air. Asphyxia is a word for when the body does not get enough oxygen. This can happen for many reasons. It can cause a person to fall into a coma or die. In 2015, many people suffered from accidental suffocation.

One way this happens is through smothering. This is when something blocks the mouth or nose. Another way is through compressive asphyxia. This is when a heavy weight presses on the chest. This weight stops the lungs from growing big to take in air. Large crowds can sometimes cause this. Even snakes like boa constrictors use this to hunt. They squeeze their prey as it breathes out.

Some things in the air can also be dangerous. Carbon monoxide is a gas from car exhaust. It is tricky because it sticks to blood cells. This stops the blood from carrying oxygen around the body. Other gases or chemicals can also make breathing hard. If someone is choking on food, you must act fast. You can stand behind them and push under their ribs. This may help clear the airway.
