Choking is a serious event that happens when something blocks a person's airway. The airway is the path that lets air travel into the lungs. This blockage is often called a foreign body airway obstruction. If air cannot pass through, the body cannot get the oxygen it needs. This lack of oxygen is very dangerous for a person. In the United States, choking is the fourth leading cause of unintentional injury deaths.

How a blockage works depends on what is stuck. A blockage can be partial, which means some air still gets through. It can also be complete, meaning no air can pass at all. This can happen in different parts of the respiratory tract, like the pharynx or the trachea. Some foods are extra risky because they change shape to fit the throat. This includes things like marshmallows, bananas, or gelatinous candies.

Many people have experienced choking at some point. Many episodes are very brief and resolve on their own. Because they end quickly, many people do not even report them. In the United States, about 4,500 to 5,000 people die from choking every year. Most of these deaths happen to very young children under age three. They also happen to older adults who are over 75 years old.

There are specific signs to watch for if someone is choking. A person might cough hard or make wheezing sounds. They might also clutch their throat or try to use hand signals. Sometimes, a person's face or fingertips may turn blue. This sign is called cyanosis, and it shows a lack of oxygen. If breathing is not restored, brain damage can happen in about three minutes. Death can occur if breathing is not fixed within six to ten minutes.

There are ways to help a person who is choking. One method is to encourage them to cough freely. You can also use back blows, which are firm slaps between the shoulder blades. Another way is the Heimlich maneuver, which uses abdominal thrusts. Some groups suggest a "five and five" method. This means alternating five back blows and five abdominal thrusts. Doctors may also use a bronchoscopy to look inside the airway and remove the object.
