Cardiopulmonary resuscitation

life science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation, or CPR, is a life-saving emergency procedure. It is used when a person's heart or breathing stops. This is a very serious moment.

The main goal is to keep blood moving through the body. This helps send oxygen to the brain and heart. Without blood flow, the brain can suffer damage after just four minutes.

If blood stops for one to two hours, body cells may die. CPR helps delay this damage until doctors can help.

To perform CPR, a rescuer uses chest compressions. For adults, you push on the sternum, which is the bone in the middle of the chest.

You must push down about 5 cm, or 2 inches, deep. The rate should be between 100 and 120 compressions every minute. Some rescuers also provide artificial ventilation, which are rescue breaths.

For adults, the pattern is usually 30 compressions followed by 2 breaths. For babies, you use only two fingers to push the chest. You must also be careful with a baby's head to keep it straight.

Rules for CPR have changed over time to help more people. In 2010, the American Heart Association (AHA) updated their guidelines. They moved the order of steps to focus on chest compressions first. This is called the CAB method, which stands for compressions, airway, and breathing.

Before this, the order was ABC, which meant airway, breathing, and then compressions. These changes help make sure blood keeps moving as quickly as possible. High-quality compressions are the most important part of the process.

There are specific steps to follow during an emergency. First, you should ask bystanders for help. If you are alone, call emergency services on the phone right away.

If an automated external defibrillator, or AED, is nearby, you should get it. An AED is a portable machine that helps the heart.

It uses electric shocks, called defibrillation, to help the heart find a healthy rhythm. This is very helpful for certain heart problems like ventricular fibrillation.

CPR works similarly to how a pump moves water through a pipe. The compressions act like a pump for the blood. This keeps the vital organs alive even when the heart is not working on its own.

You should continue CPR until the person starts breathing on their own or help arrives. If a person is drowning, the rules change slightly. For drowning victims, rescue breaths are extra important because they need oxygen. Learning these steps can make a huge difference in a crisis.
