The heart is a muscular organ that keeps us alive.

It works by pumping blood through tubes called blood vessels. This whole setup is known as the circulatory system. The blood carries oxygen and nutrients to your body's tissues. It also picks up waste like carbon dioxide to take to the lungs.

In humans, the heart sits in the middle of the chest. This area is called the mediastinum. It is located between the lungs. An adult heart is about the size of a closed fist.

Inside, the heart is divided into four chambers. There are two upper chambers called atria. There are two lower chambers called ventricles.

The right atrium and right ventricle are called the right heart. The left atrium and left ventricle are the left heart.

Heart valves act like one-way doors. They prevent blood from flowing backward. The heart wall has three layers. These are the epicardium, the myocardium, and the endocardium.

A protective sac called the pericardium encloses the heart. It even holds a small amount of fluid.

The heart pumps using a special rhythm. A group of cells called the sinoatrial node acts as a pacemaker.

These cells create an electric current. This current makes the heart contract, or squeeze. The signal travels through the atrioventricular node. It then moves through the conduction system.

This electrical work makes the heart beat steadily. The left ventricle is much thicker than the right. This is because it needs more force to pump blood to the whole body.

Blood follows a very specific path through these chambers.

First, blood enters the right atrium from the body. It moves to the right ventricle and then to the lungs. In the lungs, the blood gets oxygen.

Then, oxygenated blood returns to the left atrium. It passes to the left ventricle and enters the aorta. From there, it travels to the rest of the body.

An adult heart beats about 72 times per minute while resting. This constant movement keeps everything flowing.

Sometimes, the heart can run into trouble.

In 2008, heart diseases were the most common cause of death globally. They accounted for 30% of all human deaths. Many of these cases come from coronary artery disease or stroke. Doctors who study the heart are called cardiologists.

They might use a stethoscope to listen to heart sounds. They can also use an ECG or an ultrasound called an echocardiogram.
