Arteries are important blood vessels in humans and most animals.

Their main job is to carry blood away from the heart. Most of these vessels carry blood filled with oxygen to the body. This oxygen helps your tissues work properly. However, there are two special exceptions to this rule. The pulmonary arteries carry blood to the lungs to get oxygen. The umbilical arteries carry blood from a fetus to its mother.

An artery is built like a tiny, flexible tube. This tube has three distinct layers called tunics. The innermost layer is the tunica intima. It is made of endothelial cells that touch the flowing blood. The middle layer is the tunica media. It contains smooth muscle and elastic tissue to help the vessel bend. The outermost layer is the tunica externa. It is made of collagen fibers and elastic tissue to provide strength.

The hollow space inside the tube is called the lumen.

People have studied these vessels for a very long time. In ancient Greece, the word "arteria" actually meant the windpipe. This was because people found arteries in dead bodies without blood in them. Later, people thought arteries carried "vital spirits" instead of blood. In the 17th century, William Harvey described how the circulatory system works. This changed how we understand the roles of arteries and veins. In the 20th century, Alexis Carrel developed ways to sew blood vessels together. This helped make modern organ transplants possible.

There are many different sizes of arteries in the body. The aorta is the largest artery in the human body.

It receives blood directly from the left ventricle of the heart. Large arteries are usually elastic, while smaller ones are more muscular. As arteries branch out, they become smaller arterioles. These arterioles act like adjustable nozzles to control blood flow. They help manage your blood pressure by getting wider or narrower. The smallest vessels are called capillaries, which are only about 5 micrometers wide.

Arteries work under high pressure from the heart's pumping action. This pressure changes during the cardiac cycle. It is highest when the heart contracts and lowest when it relaxes. You can feel this change as a pulse in your wrist. Sometimes, health problems can affect these vessels. A buildup of plaque can cause a disease called atherosclerosis.

This makes the arteries hard and can cause damage. Keeping these tubes healthy helps your whole body stay strong.
