Most arteries carry blood full of oxygen. This helps your body work. One big exception is the pulmonary artery. It carries blood to the lungs to get oxygen.

An artery is a tube with three layers. These layers are called tunics. The inner layer is the tunica intima. It touches the blood as it flows. The middle layer is the tunica media. It has smooth muscle and elastic tissue. This tissue lets the artery bend. The outer layer is the tunica externa. It is made of strong fibers.

Inside the tube is a hollow space called the lumen. Blood flows through this space.

The aorta is the largest artery. It is the main path for blood. Arteries have high pressure. This pressure changes as your heart beats. You can feel this as a pulse. Small arteries called arterioles help control blood flow. They can get wider or narrower. This helps manage your blood pressure.
