An arteriole is a tiny blood vessel. It branches out from a larger artery. These small tubes lead directly to capillaries.

Arterioles are very important for your body. They are the main site of vascular resistance. This means they create friction to slow blood down. This slowing is a big deal. It causes a large drop in blood pressure. This drop protects the thin capillaries. Without this, the capillaries might explode from the pressure.

Arterioles work by changing their size. Their walls have one or two layers of smooth muscle. These muscles can tighten or relax. This process is called autoregulation. It helps organs keep steady blood flow. Many factors can change the tube size. High oxygen or stretching can increase muscle tone. Carbon dioxide or low pH can cause vasodilation. Vasodilation is when the vessel gets wider. This helps more blood flow through.

Many things control how these vessels act. The nervous system sends signals to them. They also respond to hormones in the blood. Some hormones like epinephrine can cause different effects. In skeletal muscle, they cause vasodilation. In other places, they cause vasoconstriction. Vasoconstriction is when the vessel gets tighter. Other chemicals like bradykinin help vessels relax. Meanwhile, angiotensin II helps them tighten.

A healthy lining called the endothelium covers them. This lining touches all the blood. It helps make nitric oxide to stay healthy. This requires a balance of enzymes and L-arginine. In some cases, things can go wrong. Arteriolosclerosis is when the walls become hard. This can happen as people age. Air pollution can also make the vessels smaller. This happens as people get older too.

Doctors use medicine to help these vessels. Some drugs are called antihypertensives. These help lower high blood pressure. One type is called dihydropyridines. Drugs like nifedipine work by blocking calcium. This makes the muscle layer relax. When the muscle relaxes, the vessel widens. This lowers the resistance in the body. It helps the whole system work better.
