Pulse

Your pulse is a rhythmic movement you can feel in your body. It happens because your heart beats in a cycle. Each heartbeat sends a pressure wave through your arteries. This wave causes the artery walls to expand and then contract.

This movement is a way to feel the pressure from your heart. A trained observer can use the pulse to estimate systolic blood pressure. This is the pressure during the heart's contraction. The pressure between beats is called diastolic pressure. This part of the cycle cannot be felt by touch.

There are many places where you can feel this pulse. Doctors often check the radial artery at the wrist. They might also check the carotid artery in the neck. For very young children, they often use the brachial artery in the upper arm.

You can also find pulses in the groin or behind the knee. Other spots include the ankle and the top of the foot. Each of these locations uses a different artery to carry blood. Finding these spots helps doctors understand how blood moves through the body.

People have studied the pulse for a very long time. Claudius Galen was perhaps the first person to describe it. Scientists have found many ways to measure it since then. One tool used for measuring is called a sphygmograph. In intensive care units, doctors have used special catheters since the 1970s. These are small tubes connected to a machine called a transducer. This helps them see very detailed information about the pulse.

We usually measure the pulse rate in beats per minute, or BPM. While the pulse and heartbeat are related, they are not exactly the same. There is often a small delay called the pulse transit time. This is the time it takes for the wave to travel. A healthy pulse rate is usually close to the actual heart rate. Sometimes a person has a pulse deficit. This means the pulse rate is lower than the heart rate. This can happen during certain heart conditions like atrial fibrillation.

Understanding the pulse can tell us much about health. A normal pulse has a steady rhythm and force. A weak pulse might mean low blood flow. A very strong or bounding pulse might happen during a fever. The shape of the pulse can also change. Some pulses rise and fall very quickly. Others might rise and fall slowly. By looking at these patterns, doctors can learn how the heart and arteries are working together.
