Blood pressure

life science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Blood pressure is the force of your blood pushing against the walls of your blood vessels. Most of this force comes from your heart pumping blood through your whole body.

Doctors call this one of the vital signs to check your health. They look at it alongside your heart rate and body temperature. It is very important to know if your pressure is in a healthy range. A normal resting pressure for an adult is about 120/80 mmHg.

When doctors measure this, they look at two main numbers. The first number is called systolic pressure. This is the maximum pressure when your heart beats. The second number is called diastolic pressure. This is the minimum pressure between your heartbeats.

The difference between these two numbers is called pulse pressure. The average pressure during a whole heartbeat is called mean arterial pressure. You can measure this using a tool called a sphygmomanometer.

In the past, healthcare workers used a method called auscultation. This means they used a stethoscope to listen to your arm artery. They would use a sphygmomanometer to squeeze the artery. This is still considered a gold standard for measuring pressure in clinics. Today, many people use semi-automated tools instead. These tools are easier to use and do not use mercury. This is helpful because mercury can be toxic to people and the earth.

Your blood pressure changes all the time. It can change based on your activity or how you feel. It even changes with the temperature or the noise around you.

Your pressure is usually highest in the morning and evening. It is usually lowest while you are sleeping at night. If your pressure is consistently too high, it is called hypertension. If it is too low, it is called hypotension. Long-term hypertension can lead to serious problems like heart disease or kidney failure.

Blood pressure is different for everyone based on age and size. For example, babies have much lower pressure than adults. A full-term infant might have a systolic pressure between 65 and 95 mmHg. As people get older, their systolic pressure often rises. This can happen because the arteries become more stiff.

Even in a baby, the heart works hard to drive blood through the body. Understanding these numbers helps doctors keep everyone healthy and strong.
