Aldosterone

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Aldosterone is a vital hormone that helps keep your body in balance. It belongs to a group of signals called mineralocorticoids. This hormone is made in a special part of the adrenal gland. This gland sits right on top of your kidneys. Specifically, it comes from a layer called the zona glomerulosa.

Aldosterone is very important for managing salt and water. It helps your body decide how much sodium to keep. It also helps manage your potassium levels. Without it, your blood pressure could change too much.

This hormone works through a very specific way it works. First, it travels to parts of the kidney called the distal tubules and collecting ducts.

There, it finds special spots called mineralocorticoid receptors. When aldosterone attaches to these receptors, it starts a chain of events. It tells the cells to use pumps to move sodium out of the cells and into the blood. Because water likes to follow sodium, the water moves into the blood too. This process increases your blood volume. At the same time, the hormone helps the body get rid of extra potassium through urine.

Scientists first discovered this hormone many years ago. Sylvia Tait and Jim Tait worked together to isolate it in 1953. They did this work with a scientist named Tadeusz Reichstein. Since then, we have learned much more about how it is made. The body builds aldosterone from a substance called cholesterol. This happens inside the cells of the adrenal cortex. Special tools called enzymes, like aldosterone synthase, help finish the job.

This enzyme is only found in the outer edge of the adrenal gland.

Many different things can tell the body to release aldosterone. One major way is through the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system. If your blood pressure drops, your kidneys release a hormone called renin. This leads to the creation of angiotensin II, which tells the adrenal gland to act.

High levels of potassium in your blood are also a very strong signal. Other things like stress, pregnancy, or even physical exertion can change its levels. It even follows a daily rhythm in your body. The hormone does not stay in your blood for very long. Its half-life is less than 20 minutes.

Understanding aldosterone helps us understand how medicine works for heart health. Doctors sometimes use drugs to change how much aldosterone is in the body. For example, a drug called lisinopril helps lower blood pressure. It works by blocking a step that leads to more aldosterone. Another medicine called spironolactone blocks the receptors directly.

These medicines help prevent kidney and heart disease. They help the body get rid of too much salt and water. This keeps your blood pressure at a healthy level. It is just like a thermostat controlling the temperature in a house.
