Percussion (medicine)

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Percussion is a special way doctors examine the body. It is one of four main ways to check a patient. These ways include inspection, palpation, and auscultation. Percussion works by tapping on a surface. This helps a doctor find what is underneath the skin.

It is a very helpful tool for medical exams. Doctors use it to check the chest or the belly.

There are two main ways to do this. One way is called direct percussion. This uses only one or two fingers. The other way is called indirect percussion. In this way, the doctor uses the middle finger. They place one finger firmly on the body. This finger is called the pleximeter. The doctor then taps the pleximeter with another finger. They use a quick wrist action to tap.

Sometimes they tap directly on a bone like the clavicle.

This method has a very long history. People once used tapping to check liquor barrels. They wanted to see if they were empty or full. A man named Avicenna used it for medicine long ago. He used it to check the stomach. He did this about 1,000 years before modern medicine. Later, Dr. Leopold Auenbrugger introduced it to modern medical practice.

When a doctor taps, they listen for four types of sounds. A resonant sound means there is air inside. This is common in a healthy chest. A tympanitic sound is like a drum. This happens over air-filled parts of the abdomen. A dull sound means there is a solid mass. This might be something like a liver. A stony dull sound means the area is very solid.

Doctors also feel for vibrations in their fingers.

Percussion helps doctors find many different health issues. They can check the thorax, which is the chest area. It helps them find diseases like emphysema. It also helps find a pneumothorax. In the abdomen, doctors look for organomegaly. This is when an organ is too large. The tapping sets the tissue into vibration. The sound tells the doctor if the tissue is healthy.
