He also loved to carve wooden flutes. This skill with wood helped him create a new medical tool. His work changed how doctors listen to the human body. He helped people understand many different illnesses of the chest.

In 1816, Laennec worked at the Hôpital Necker. He needed to listen to a young woman's heart. It was hard to use the old way of listening. The patient was overweight, which made it difficult. Also, placing an ear directly on a patient could be embarrassing. Laennec remembered how sound travels through wood. He rolled a piece of paper into a tube. He put one end on her chest and the other to his ear. This worked much better than before.

Laennec called his new invention the stethoscope. The name comes from Greek words. "Stethos" means chest and "skopos" means examination. His first version was a hollow wooden cylinder. It was 25 cm long and 2.5 cm wide. He later made a better version with three parts. This new design had a funnel shape to make sounds louder. He called this method mediate auscultation, which means indirect listening.

Laennec was a very busy and gifted student. He studied medicine at the University of Paris. He learned to use sound to help find sickness. He became a professor of medicine in 1823. He also worked at the Hôpital de la Charité. He even wrote a famous book in 1819. It was called "On Mediate Auscultation." This book helped doctors in many different countries.

Today, doctors still use stethoscopes every single day. Modern versions look different than his wooden tube. A man named A. Leared made the two-earpiece version in 1851. G.P. Cammann made it ready for stores in 1852. Laennec also gave names to other medical things. He named a liver disease cirrhosis. He also named a skin disease melanoma. His legacy lives on in every hospital.
