Palpation

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Palpation is a special way that health workers use touch to check the body. It is a very important part of a physical exam. While sight is helpful, the sense of touch is just as vital. A practitioner uses their hands to feel objects on or inside a person. They look for things like size, shape, or how firm something feels. This helps them find out if someone is sick or healthy.

This process works by feeling for specific signs in the body. A doctor might feel for a pulse or a swelling in the belly. They can also feel for a bone fracture or a hard tumor. Sometimes, they look for anatomical landmarks, which are specific parts of the skeleton. They might check for a hernia or a joint that is out of place. By pressing on tissue, they can also see if it causes pain. This helps them understand exactly where a problem is located.

Many different experts use this skill in their daily work. Physicians and nurses use palpation to assess a patient's health. Chiropractors, massage therapists, and physical therapists use it too. Even veterinarians use touch to check animals. For example, a vet might feel a pregnant animal's stomach. This ensures the animal is healthy and can deliver its young. Midwives also use touch to find the position of a baby.

Scientists and doctors use strict rules to make these checks accurate. These rules are called palpation protocols. They use these protocols to find skeletal landmarks with great detail. Manual palpation uses hands to find these spots within one centimeter. Some experts even use virtual palpation on 3D computer models. These models come from medical imaging like an MRI. This allows them to see how joints move while walking or climbing stairs.

New technology is now helping to improve how we feel the body. One new way is called elastography, which became common in the last ten years. It uses ultrasound or MRI to see how stiff tissue is. This can help find things like a thyroid carcinoma. Another way is computerized palpation, also called tactile imaging. This uses a probe with sensors to act like human fingers. It turns the sense of touch into a digital image on a screen.
