life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A rash is a change in the skin. It can change how the skin looks or feels. A rash might change the color or texture of your skin. It can make the skin itchy, warm, or bumpy. Some rashes feel dry, cracked, or even blistered. They can also be painful or swollen. A rash might stay in one small spot. Other rashes can cover your whole body.

Many different things can cause a rash. Some people have an allergy to food, dyes, or insect stings. You might react to metals like nickel or zinc. These reactions often cause hives. Other rashes come from touching an irritant. This could be poison ivy or even certain clothes. Sunburn and heat are also common causes. Even feeling anxious can lead to a rash. Some rashes come from germs, like a fungal infection called ringworm.

Doctors look for clues to find the cause. They look at the appearance of the skin. They check if the rash is symmetrical. This means it looks the same on both sides of your body. They also look at where the rash is located. For example, measles starts on the head and spreads downward. Chickenpox blisters often follow the hollows of the body. Some rashes, like syphilis, appear on the palms or soles of the feet. A doctor might use a patch test to find out what you are allergic to.

There are many specific types of skin conditions. Acne can cause bumps on the face, chest, or back. Eczema and psoriasis are other common skin diseases. Psoriasis often looks like white, scaly skin over red areas. Some rashes, like Lyme disease, can grow very large. A Lyme disease rash can reach 5 to 70 centimeters. Other rashes, like shingles, can be very painful. Even small things like warts can appear on the skin.

Treating a rash depends on what caused it. Most treatments are different for each specific condition. Some people use a topical cream, which is a medicine you rub on the skin. Steroid creams, like hydrocortisone, are often used to help. Many of these medicines are available over the counter in the United States. However, some steroid creams may not work well if they cannot soak into the skin. A doctor can help you find the right way to feel better.
