Many people use this skill. Nurses and physical therapists use it too. They might feel for a pulse. A vet might feel an animal's belly. This helps them check on a baby animal. Doctors use it to find painful spots. They can also find bones. These bones are called anatomical landmarks.

Sometimes, doctors use new tools. They use elastography. This is a way to see how stiff tissue is. It uses ultrasound or MRI to make a map. Some tools even use computers. These tools turn touch into a digital image. This is called computerized palpation. It works like a finger with a sensor. This helps doctors see things deep inside the body.
