A medical diagnosis is a way to find out why someone is sick.

Doctors use the short name "Dx" for this. They want to find the disease that explains a person's signs and symptoms. A sign is something a doctor can see. A symptom is something a patient feels.

To find the answer, doctors gather information. They ask about a patient's medical history. They also do a physical exam. Sometimes they use diagnostic tests. These tests can include blood tests or medical imaging.

One tool is radiography, which uses special machines to see inside the body.

Diagnosis can be hard. Some signs are not clear. For example, red skin can mean many different things. Doctors use a method called differential diagnosis. They make a list of possible causes. Then they rule them out one by one. They might also use pattern recognition. This is when a doctor sees a group of signs they have seen before.

Computers can help too. Some programs are called clinical decision support systems. These tools help doctors make better choices. They do not replace the doctor, but they provide extra help.
