Doctors use medical tests to help people. These tests find, name, or watch diseases. They also show if a treatment is working.

There are many ways to test a body. Some tests look at a person. A doctor might ask questions or look at you. Other tests use tools like x-rays. These tools make an image of your body. Some tests look at samples. These samples can be blood or urine. A doctor might also look at tiny parts of a cell. This is called cellular analysis.

Tests have different jobs. A diagnostic test finds a sickness in one person. A screening test looks at a large group. This helps find sickness early in people at risk. Some tests are for monitoring. They check how a person responds to medicine.

A test result can be positive or negative. A positive test means the thing being checked was found. A negative test means it was not found. This does not always mean bad news. For example, a negative test for cancer is good news!

Doctors must think before they test. They look at the benefit and the harm. They want the test to help more than it hurts.
