Medical test

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Medical tests are important tools used by healthcare providers. They help doctors detect, name, or watch diseases and disease processes. Doctors also use them to see if a person is likely to get sick. These tests can even help decide which treatment is best for a patient.

Tests happen in many different medical settings. Some involve looking at a person or asking them questions about their health. Others use special tools like x-rays to make images of the body. Some tests look at tiny things like cells or chemicals in the body.

Tests work in a few main ways depending on their goal. A diagnostic test is used when someone already has symptoms. For example, a doctor might check blood sugar if a person urinates more often. This helps confirm if a person has diabetes. A screening test is different because it looks at groups of people. These tests find sickness early in people who might be at risk. A newborn might have their blood checked for certain conditions.

Another screening is a Pap smear used to find cervical cancer early.

There are many ways to collect the information for a test. Some tests happen inside the body, which is called in vivo. This might involve using a catheter to look at the colon. Other tests happen outside the body, which is called in vitro. In these tests, a sample like blood or urine is taken. Doctors can look at these samples to find microbes or check things like calcium. They can also check electrolytes like sodium or potassium in the blood. Some tests even look at a person's genes to find information.

When a test is done, the result can be positive or negative. A positive result means the thing being checked was found. A negative result means it was not found. A negative result is not always bad news. For instance, a negative test for cancer is actually very good for a patient. Some tests also give a number, which is called quantification. This tells the doctor exactly how much of something is in the body. A blood test might show the mass concentration of a substance.

Doctors must be very careful when choosing to perform a test. They look for an indication, which is a good medical reason to test. They also watch for a contraindication, which is a reason not to test. For example, if a person just had a test, doing it again might be a contraindication. Doctors try to make sure the benefit of the test is greater than any harm. Some tests have small risks, while others might need anesthesia. They also think about the cost and the time the test takes.
