To do this, a doctor uses their fingers. One finger stays still on your body. This finger is called a pleximeter. The doctor taps that finger with another finger. They use their wrist to make the tap. Sometimes they tap on a bone like the clavicle. This can be done with just one or two fingers. This is called direct percussion. Using the middle finger is called indirect percussion.

When they tap, they listen for sounds. They also feel for vibrations in their finger. A hollow space with air makes a resonant sound. This sounds like a drum. A solid mass makes a dull sound. A very dull sound is called stony dull. These sounds help doctors find problems. They can check the chest or the belly. They look for big organs or lung issues. Percussion helps them see if you are healthy.
