They use it to test your reflexes. A reflex is a quick body move. This test helps doctors study your nervous system. The nervous system is the part of your body that sends signals.

There are many types of hammers. John Madison Taylor made the Taylor hammer in 1888. It has a rubber part shaped like a triangle.

It is very light. The Queen Square hammer is common in the UK. It often has a metal disk on a handle. Some hammers have a sharp end.

Other tools have different shapes. The Trömner hammer looks like a mallet with two heads.

One head is large and one is small. Doctors use the large head for tendon stretch reflexes.

Doctors check if a reflex is too strong. This is called hyperreflexia. They also check if it is too weak. This is called hyporeflexia. A doctor might swing the hammer in a curve. They might also let the hammer fall with gravity.
