People use them when fingers are too large. They help hold many small things at once. Most forceps are used in medicine or biology.

There are two main types of forceps. The first type is non-locking. These are often called thumb forceps. A doctor holds them like a pen. They use a spring to keep the tips apart. This lets them pick up delicate tissue easily. Some have teeth on the tips. These teeth help with a better grip.

The second type is locking forceps. These are often called clamps. They use a ratchet to stay closed. A ratchet is a small part that locks together. This lets the tool hold an object tightly. One kind is called a hemostat. It stops bleeding by clamping a blood vessel.

Many forceps are made of strong steel. This helps them stay safe during cleaning. Some are made of plastic. These are meant to be used only once. Then they are thrown away.
