Radiology is a special part of medicine. It uses imaging tools to see inside the body.

Doctors use these images to find diseases. They also use them to guide treatments. This field helps both humans and animals. It started with a type of imaging called radiography. Today, it includes many different ways to see inside. Some ways use radiation, while others do not.

One common way to see inside is plain radiography. This uses X-rays to make a picture. An X-ray tube sends a beam through a patient. The rays pass through the body to a detector. Some rays are absorbed or scattered by the body. The rays that make it through create the image. Modern systems use digital sensors to make these pictures. These sensors turn signals into digital information for a computer. This is much faster than using old film.

There is also a tool called a CT scan. This stands for computed tomography. In a CT scan, an X-ray tube rotates in a ring. The ring spins around the patient. It uses computers to make a 3D image.

This tool was a huge change in the 1970s. Before CT scans, doctors sometimes had to use surgery to see problems. Now, CT scans can find urgent issues like blood clots. They can also see things like appendicitis very quickly.

Some tools do not use any radiation at all. Ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to see soft parts. It is very safe, so it is common for checking babies.

MRI stands for magnetic resonance imaging. This tool uses strong magnetic fields. It aligns tiny parts inside the body called protons. Then, it uses radio signals to make an image. MRI gives the best pictures of soft tissues. However, patients must stay very still in a noisy space.

Many people work together in radiology. A radiologist is a doctor who studies the images. They talk to other doctors about what they see. A radiographer is a professional who performs the scans. They help with X-rays and radiation therapy for things like cancer. Nurses also help by watching the patient. They check vital signs before and after the procedure. This team makes sure the imaging works well for everyone.
