Cardiopulmonary bypass

life science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Surgeons often need to perform operations on a person's heart. It is very hard to work on a heart while it is beating. To solve this, doctors use a special machine called a cardiopulmonary bypass machine.

This machine is also known as a heart-lung machine. It takes over the job of the heart and the lungs for a short time. A specialist called a perfusionist operates the machine during the surgery. This allows the surgeon to work in a bloodless area. The machine keeps blood moving and full of oxygen throughout the whole body.

The machine works using a series of tubes and special parts. First, a venous cannula removes blood that has very little oxygen from the body. This blood travels through tubes made of silicone rubber or PVC. A pump then pushes the blood through the system. Some machines use a centrifugal pump that uses spinning force to move blood. Other machines use a roller pump that gently massages the tubes to move the blood.

Next, the blood enters an oxygenator. The oxygenator adds oxygen to the blood and removes carbon dioxide. Finally, an arterial cannula puts the fresh blood back into the body.

Doctors use this technology for many different types of heart repairs. They use it for heart valve repair or replacement. It is also used during heart or lung transplants. Sometimes, the machine helps fix holes in the heart called septal defects. It can even be used to treat large aneurysms. In some cases, the machine helps manage a condition called pulmonary thromboendarterectomy. The machine is a vital tool for many complex life-saving procedures.

One important thing the machine can do is control body temperature. This is done using a heat exchanger. The machine can cool the blood to create a state called hypothermia.

Cold blood slows down the body's need for oxygen. This helps keep the person safe during long surgeries. If a person is too cold, the machine can also warm them up. This works well if the person's core temperature is above 16 °C.

This technology is similar to how your own body works every day. Your heart acts like a pump to move blood through your veins. Your lungs act like an oxygenator to swap gases in your blood. The heart-lung machine simply does these two jobs using mechanical parts. There is also a simpler version called ECMO. ECMO uses a centrifugal pump and an oxygenator to help lungs or hearts recover. It gives the organs time to repair themselves after a problem. It is a temporary way to help a person stay stable.
