Doctors sometimes need to do surgery on a beating heart. This can be very hard. To help, they use a heart-lung machine. This machine is also called cardiopulmonary bypass.

A specialist called a perfusionist runs the machine. It takes over the job of the heart and lungs.

The machine uses tubes to move blood. It has a pump to keep blood moving. It also has an oxygenator. An oxygenator is a part that adds oxygen to the blood. It also lets out carbon dioxide. This mimics how our lungs work.

The machine can also cool the blood. This is called hypothermia. Cold blood makes the body need less oxygen. This keeps the person safe while the surgeon works. The machine can even be used to warm a person up. Surgeons use this tool for many things. They use it for heart transplants or to fix heart valves. It gives the heart time to rest and heal.
