Cough

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A cough is a sudden burst of air through your breathing passages. It is a protective reflex, which is a way your body reacts without you thinking about it. This reflex helps clear out fluids, irritants, or tiny foreign particles. It can also help remove microbes, which are tiny living things like bacteria.

Because it is a natural defense, coughing can sometimes be repetitive. If a cough is productive, it means it is bringing up phlegm. This helps clean your airways, so stopping a productive cough might even be harmful.

The cough reflex works in three specific steps. First, you take a quick breath in, which is called an inhalation. Next, you force air out against a closed part of your throat called the glottis. Finally, you have a violent release of air when the glottis opens. This final step usually makes a very distinctive sound.

This process is a powerful way to push things out of your lungs.

Doctors look at how long a cough lasts to understand it. A cough that lasts less than three weeks is called acute. If it lasts between three and eight weeks, it is subacute. A cough that lasts longer than eight weeks is called chronic.

In healthy children, it might be normal to cough ten times a day. A healthy adult coughs about 18.6 times a day on average.

Many different things can cause a person to cough. Most short coughs are caused by a common cold. Some people cough because of asthma or air pollution like tobacco smoke. Other causes include medicines like ACE inhibitors or heart issues like heart failure.

In people with respiratory disease, the average number of coughs jumps to 275 times a day. Even spicy things like capsaicin from chili peppers can trigger a cough.

Understanding a cough helps us stay healthy and protect others. You can reduce the spread of infectious droplets by coughing into your elbow. You can also cough toward the ground instead of at breathing height.

This is important because many viruses and bacteria use coughing to spread. Just like a sneeze, a cough is a way for the body to respond to the world around it.
