A cough is a quick puff of air. It moves through your breathing paths. This helps clear out dust, tiny bits of food, or fluids.

This is a protective reflex. A reflex is a way your body reacts without thinking.

The cough happens in three steps. First, you breathe in. Next, you hold your breath against a closed part of your throat. Then, you let out a big burst of air. This makes a loud sound.

Coughs can be short or long. A cough that lasts less than three weeks is acute. A cough lasting more than eight weeks is chronic. Many things can cause a cough. It might be a cold or asthma. Some medicines can also cause it.

Some coughs are productive. This means they make up phlegm. Phlegm is a thick liquid from your body. Coughing helps clear this liquid out. To stay safe, cough into your elbow. This helps stop germs from spreading in the air.
