A sneeze is a sudden burst of air.

It comes from your lungs. It travels through your nose and mouth. This helps clean your nasal cavity. It pushes out mucus and tiny bits that irritate you.

Many things can cause a sneeze. Dust or tiny bits in the air can do it. Bright light can also trigger a sneeze. This is called the photic sneeze reflex. A very full stomach might cause one, too.

A sneeze happens in two steps. First, your brain feels an irritant. This is the sensory phase. Then, your brain sends a signal to your muscles. This is the motor phase. Your chest and stomach muscles contract. This forces air out in a big burst. Your eyes often close during this time.

Sneezes can spread germs through tiny droplets.

To stay safe, cover your mouth. Use a tissue or your inner elbow. Do not use your hands. This stops germs from getting on things you touch.

It is also not good to hold a sneeze in. This can put too much pressure on your body.
