Human nose

Your nose is a very busy part of your body. It is the first organ of the respiratory system, which helps you breathe.

It is also the main part of the olfactory system. This is the system that gives you the sense of smell. The nose is shaped by hard nasal bones and flexible nasal cartilages. A wall called the nasal septum divides the inside into two parts.

This structure is important for many things you do every day.

Your nose works in several clever ways to keep you healthy. When you breathe in, nasal hair in your nostrils catches large particles. This stops dirt from entering your lungs. The inside of your nose is lined with a wet layer called mucosa.

This lining warms and moistens the air you breathe. Shell-like bones called nasal conchae help this conditioning happen. If something irritates this lining, your body uses a reflex called sneezing. This quick action expels unwanted particles from your nose.

Smelling is another major job for your nose. There is a special area called the olfactory epithelium in the upper nasal cavity.

This area contains specialized olfactory cells that detect smells. Your nose even helps you speak through a process called nasalisation. This helps you make nasal vowels and consonants. Hollow spaces called paranasal sinuses act as sound chambers.

These chambers modify and amplify your vocal sounds.

Many different parts make up the framework of the nose. The bones include the maxilla, the frontal bone, and the ethmoid bone.

The septum is made of bone at the top and cartilage near the tip. There are also several types of cartilage, like the septal and alar cartilages.

Muscles in your face can move your nose in different ways. For example, the nasalis muscle can flare your nostrils. The procerus muscle can wrinkle the bridge of your nose.

Because the nose is so important, doctors sometimes perform surgery on it. These procedures are called rhinoplasties. Some are used to fix structural defects from injury or birth. This is known as reconstructive surgery. Other people choose elective cosmetic surgery to change the shape of their nose. The thickness of your skin also changes across the nose. It is thick at the tip and very thin at the bridge.
