The pharynx is a very important part of your body. It is the part of the throat located behind your mouth and nasal cavity.

This area sits above the esophagus and the trachea. The trachea is the tube that leads to your lungs. The esophagus is the tube that leads to your stomach. In humans, the pharynx helps both the digestive system and the respiratory system. It helps move air and food to the right places. This makes it a busy and vital part of how we live.

This part of the throat works in a very organized way. It is divided into three main sections. The first section is the nasopharynx, which is at the top near the skull. The second section is the oropharynx, located behind the mouth. The third section is the laryngopharynx, which is the bottom part.

When you swallow, a small flap of tissue called the epiglottis acts like a gate. It closes over the larynx to stop food from going into your lungs. This ensures food goes down the esophagus instead. This clever way of working keeps your breathing safe while you eat.

Scientists and doctors have studied the pharynx for a long time. The word pharynx comes from the Greek word "pharynx," which simply means throat.

There are many different parts of the throat that can change. For example, people can get pharyngitis, which is a painful swelling of the throat. There are also special tissues called the Waldeyer's tonsillar ring. This ring is an arrangement of lymphoid tissue in the nasopharynx and oropharynx. It helps the body defend itself against tiny germs. This ring helps protect your air and food passages.

There are many interesting facts about how the pharynx looks and acts. In the nasopharynx, there is an auditory tube that connects to your middle ear. This tube helps balance the air pressure in your ear. The oropharynx contains the palatine tonsils on its sides.

Some tiny organisms, like the HACEK group, live naturally in the oropharynx. These organisms grow slowly and prefer an atmosphere with carbon dioxide. In the laryngopharynx, nerves like the vagus nerve provide signals to the area. This nerve even helps create the ear-cough reflex. This happens when the ear canal is stimulated.

Many other living things have a pharynx too. All vertebrates, which are animals with backbones, have one. Even invertebrates, like worms and certain insects, have a pharynx. Some fish have a very special version called pharyngeal jaws.

A moray eel uses these second jaws to grab its prey. First, it bites with its mouth, and then the pharyngeal jaws pull the food down. This is a great example of how different animals use the same basic idea in unique ways. The pharynx is truly a remarkable tool for life.
