The pharynx has three main parts. The first is the nasopharynx. This part is at the top near your skull. It connects to your nose. It also has a tube that connects to your ear. This tube helps balance the air pressure in your ear. The middle part is the oropharynx. This part is behind your mouth. The last part is the laryngopharynx. This is the bottom part of your throat. It leads to the esophagus, which is the tube to your stomach.

The pharynx does many jobs. It moves food to your stomach. It also moves air to your lungs. A small flap called the epiglottis helps. It closes when you swallow. This keeps food from going into your lungs.

Many other animals have a pharynx too. Some fish have a second set of jaws inside their throat. These are called pharyngeal jaws. A moray eel uses them to grab food. It pulls the food down into its stomach.
