They help your immune system. This is the part of your body that fights germs. The tonsils act like guards. They watch for bad germs in the air you breathe. They also watch for germs in the food you eat.

These guards work in a ring. This ring is called Waldeyer's ring. It has four main types. You have the pharyngeal tonsil, also called the adenoid. You also have two tubal tonsils. There are two palatine tonsils on the sides of your throat. Finally, you have lingual tonsils on your tongue.

Your tonsils change as you grow. They are often large in young children. The adenoid grows until age 5. It starts to shrink at age 7. The palatine tonsils get largest during puberty. After that, they slowly shrink. In adults, they are much smaller.

Sometimes the tonsils get very big. This is called hypertrophy. Big tonsils can make it hard to breathe or sleep. They can even change how you speak. Sometimes, small white bits called tonsil stones get stuck in them. These bits can smell bad. They are made mostly of calcium.
