Tonsil

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Your tonsils are tiny but very important parts of your body. They are lymphoid organs that sit in your throat. These organs help your immune system stay strong. They act like guards at the entrance of your body. They watch the paths where air and food enter. This area is called the aerodigestive tract. The tonsils form a circle known as Waldeyer's ring.

This ring helps protect you from germs you breathe or swallow.

These guards work by watching for tiny invaders. They use special cells to catch these invaders. These cells include B cells and T cells. They also use macrophages and dendritic cells. The tonsils have deep folds called crypts. These crypts increase the surface area for catching germs.

When germs enter, cells in the germinal centers become very active. B cells then change to make better antibodies. These antibodies, like IgA or IgG, help stop infections. This way, the tonsils train your body to fight back.

Humans are born with four different types of tonsils. The pharyngeal tonsil is also called the adenoid. There are two tubal tonsils near your ear tubes. You also have two palatine tonsils on the sides of your throat. Finally, the lingual tonsils sit at the back of your tongue.

Each type has a different shape and location. Some have long folds while others have small bumps. They all work together to keep you healthy.

Your tonsils change in size as you get older. The adenoid grows until you are 5 years old. It starts to shrink when you are 7. Palatine tonsils are often largest during puberty. In adults, they might be 2.5 cm long.

They can also be 2.0 cm wide and 1.2 cm thick. The lingual tonsils develop more slowly than the others. They stay a relatively stable size throughout your life.

Sometimes tonsils can cause a few different problems. If they get too big, it is called hypertrophy. This can make it hard to sleep or breathe. This enlargement can even change how your voice sounds. Sometimes, small white bits called tonsil stones can form.

These stones are made mostly of calcium. They can grow to the size of a blueberry. They often have a very strong, unpleasant smell. Doctors can use medicine or surgery to help these issues.
