Organ system

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

An organ system is a group of organs working together. They perform important jobs for a living thing. Each organ has its own special role. Organs are made of different tissues. These systems help a body stay healthy and function. Without them, life could not work properly.

These systems work in many different ways. The respiratory system helps you breathe. It uses the nose, lungs, and trachea. The circulatory system moves blood through the body. It uses the heart, arteries, and veins. The digestive system breaks down food for nutrients. It includes the stomach, liver, and intestines. The urinary system cleans the blood. It uses the kidneys and bladder to make urine. Each step helps the body stay in balance.

Humans have 11 distinct organ systems. These include the skeletal and muscular systems. The integumentary system uses skin and hair for protection. The endocrine system uses glands to send messages. The lymphatic system helps with immune responses. The nervous system uses the brain to process info. The reproductive system is used for making new life. Some organs belong to two systems. For example, the nose helps with breathing and smelling. The ovaries help with both reproduction and hormones.

There are many specific parts in these systems. The skeletal system uses bones and cartilage for support. The muscular system uses different muscles to move. The endocrine system has the thyroid and adrenal glands. The digestive system uses the esophagus and pancreas. The respiratory system includes the pharynx and larynx. The nervous system uses the spinal cord and nerves. Even the exocrine system has special glands. These glands help with things like lubrication.

Plants also have organ systems to live. Vascular plants have two main systems. The root system is usually underground. It anchors the plant and absorbs water. It also stores carbohydrates for the plant. The shoot system grows above the ground. It includes the stem, leaves, and flowers. Leaves use light for photosynthesis. The stem moves materials between the roots and leaves.

Living things use these systems to survive. Animals have systems similar to humans. Some simpler animals have fewer systems. They might have many organs in one system. Plants use their systems to grow and eat. The shoot system helps them find sunlight. The root system helps them find water. All these parts work together every day. This teamwork makes life possible for everyone.
