The trachea is a very important tube in your body. Most people call it the windpipe.

It connects your larynx, which is your voice box, to your lungs. This tube allows air to pass in and out of your body. Almost all land animals with lungs have a trachea. It is a vital part of the respiratory tract. Without it, air could not reach the lungs to keep you alive.

The trachea works by staying open and cleaning the air.

It is made of 16 to 20 C-shaped rings of hyaline cartilage. These rings are about 4 millimeters high. They act like a sturdy frame to prevent the tube from collapsing. A muscle called the trachealis connects the ends of these rings. This muscle can contract when you cough to change the tube's size. Inside, tiny hairs called cilia move mucus up and out.

This process is called mucociliary clearance.

Scientists and doctors have studied the trachea for a long time. We know it starts to form very early in life. During the second month of embryo development, the trachea begins to grow. It starts as a small bud in the respiratory system. By the fifth week, the main branches called bronchi begin to form. In the first year of life, the trachea is only 4 millimeters wide. By late childhood, it grows to about 2 centimeters in diameter.

There are many specific facts about how the trachea is built.

An adult trachea is wider in males than in females. It starts at the level of the sixth cervical vertebra. It ends at the carina, where it splits into two bronchi. The carina is at the level of the fourth thoracic vertebra. The trachea is also surrounded by many other parts. The thyroid gland sits across the upper part of the tube. Nearby, large blood vessels like the aortic arch pass close by.

Learning about the trachea helps us understand how we breathe every day. If the tube gets too narrow, it makes a loud sound.

This sound is called stridor. It can happen if there is an infection or swelling. You might also see different types of tracheae in nature. For example, insects use a very different system to breathe. They use tiny tubes called tracheae and spiracles to move gases. This shows how different living things solve the same big problem.
