Respiratory disease

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Respiratory diseases are illnesses that affect the organs used for breathing. These diseases make it hard for animals to exchange gases with the air. They can affect many parts of the respiratory tract. This includes the trachea, which is the windpipe, and the bronchi. They also affect the tiny air sacs called alveoli. Some diseases are mild, like the common cold or influenza. Other diseases are much more serious and can threaten life. Examples include tuberculosis, lung cancer, and COVID-19.

Doctors group these diseases in different ways to understand them. One group is called obstructive lung disease. In these cases, the airways become blocked or narrow. This makes it hard for air to reach the alveoli. Asthma is a well-known example of this. Another group is restrictive lung disease. These diseases make the lungs stiff or hard to expand. This can happen because of things inside the lungs or things outside them.

Infections are a very common cause of breathing problems. Doctors divide these into upper and lower respiratory tract infections. The common cold is a common upper infection. Croup is a viral infection that causes a barking cough. On an X-ray, doctors can see a "steeple sign" from a narrow trachea. Lower infections include pneumonia, which affects the lungs. Pneumonia can be caused by bacteria like Streptococcus pneumoniae. It can also be caused by viruses or fungi.

Some respiratory issues are caused by tumors or blood problems. Malignant tumors, or cancers, are a major health problem. Lung cancer is responsible for 30% of all cancer deaths. Smoking tobacco is a major cause for many of these cancers. Other cancers, like breast or colon cancer, can also spread to the lungs. There are also pulmonary vascular diseases. These affect the blood flow in the lungs. A pulmonary embolism happens when a blood clot travels to the lungs. This can be very dangerous and cause sudden death.

Even tiny babies can face respiratory challenges. Infant respiratory distress syndrome often happens to premature babies. This is caused by a lack of surfactant, a substance that helps lungs stay open. This condition usually appears within six hours after birth. For adults, doctors who study these systems are called pulmonologists. They use tools like spirometry to test how well lungs work. By studying these diseases, scientists learn how to help people breathe more easily.
