Venom

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Venom is a special kind of toxin made by animals. It is different from poison because it is delivered actively. An animal uses a bite or a sting to send it into a wound. This process is called envenomation.

Animals use these toxins for many different reasons. Some use it to hunt for food. Others use it to stay safe from enemies. Venom is found in over 173,000 different species. It exists in both land animals and creatures that live in the water.

Venom works through different types of toxins. Neurotoxins are common in mambas and black widow spiders. These toxins affect the nervous system of the animal. Myotoxins damage muscles and are found in rattlesnakes. Cytotoxins kill individual cells. These are found in the venom of honey bees.

Some venoms also include necrotoxins. These cause death in the cells and tissues they touch. There are even haemotoxins that disrupt how blood clots. Because venoms are often complex mixtures, they can do many things at once.

Venom has appeared many times in the history of life. Scientists call this convergent evolution. This means different animals developed venom on their own. It has evolved independently at least 104 times.

Many animals get their toxins from other sources. Some even get them from microbes living in their bodies. For example, the platypus evolved its venom from modified sweat glands. This shows how many different ways nature finds to make venom.

Many different groups of animals carry venom. Arthropods like spiders and scorpions are very common. In bees, the stinger is actually a modified egg-laying device.

There are also many venomous fish. Over 300 species of scorpionfish and 80 species of stonefish use venom. Some reptiles like the Komodo dragon also have it. Even a few mammals use venom. This includes the vampire bat and the male platypus. Some amphibians even use venom-tipped ribs to protect themselves.

Venom is not just dangerous; it is also very useful for humans. This field of study is called venomics. Scientists use venom to help treat many medical conditions. For example, snake venom can help treat arthritis and cancer.

The Gila monster's venom helps treat type 2 diabetes. Some venoms can even help with blood clotting issues. In nature, animals play a game of survival with venom. This is called a chemical arms race. For instance, clownfish live safely inside venomous sea anemones. They have become resistant to the sting so they can stay protected.
