Different venoms work in different ways. Neurotoxins affect the nervous system. Myotoxins damage muscles. Cytotoxins kill cells. Some venoms even stop blood from clotting. Many animals have venom. This includes spiders, bees, and snakes. Even some mammals like the platypus use it.

Some animals have learned to live with it. For example, clownfish live in sea anemones. These anemones have venom, but the fish are resistant. This is a kind of coevolution. It is like a chemical arms race between hunters and prey. Scientists also study venom. They use it to make new medicines. Venom can help treat things like arthritis or cancer. This field of study is called venomics.
