An executioner is an official who carries out a sentence of capital punishment. This means they carry out a death sentence on a person.

People often use different names for them. A hangman is someone who uses hanging. A headsman is someone who uses beheading. An executioner usually receives a warrant to do this work. This legal paper protects them from being charged with murder. In the military, a soldier like a provost might do this job.

Many executioners were professional specialists who traveled to different areas. They did this because executions did not happen very often. In medieval Europe, these workers often had other jobs to survive. They often worked as knackers, which means they dealt with animal carcasses. They also managed latrines and cesspools. Some even controlled gaming houses or taxed lepers and prostitutes. This helped them make enough money to live.

In many places, executioners were treated differently by their neighbors. In Western Europe, people often shunned them. In France, executioner families lived in social isolation. In Germany, they were called "dishonourable people." In Japan, they were part of the Burakumin class. In Korea, they were known as the Baekjeong group. Even when they had money, they often faced being left alone by others.

Some families kept this job for many years. In France, the Sanson family provided six executioners between 1688 and 1847. The Deibler dynasty also provided five members until 1981. In Britain, the Pierrepoint family had three executioners between 1902 and 1956. These included Henry, his brother Thomas, and his son Albert. In the Ottoman Empire, the imperial guard called bostanji performed this role. These guards were actually called "gardeners."

There are many interesting stories about this job in history. In the Ottoman Empire, a man named Hacı Salih Pasha once raced a guard. He raced to the Fish Market Gate to avoid execution. He won the race in November 1822 and became a governor. In Ireland, a woman named Lady Betty became a hangwoman. She did this to save her own life from a death sentence. Executioners even had their own graveyards with simple, unpolished stones.
